Tapestry or Wall Hanging Made by A. Smit

This tapestry was made in 1945 by A. Smit and was purchased by a Dutch-Indonesian gentleman as he resided on the East part of the Indonesian island of Java. This work is colorful and has clearly been influenced by Fauvism and Expressionism. The tapestry is a wonderful representation of animals in several colors. The flat patterns and the combination of (not recognizable as such) batik and embroidery make this piece very special. The hardwood 89cm sticks on its top and bottom are original.

The imagery seems to be a hunting scene dating from prehistory or from a primitive culture. One sees cavemen in black, blue and green colors, wearing spears or bows and arrows. They are hunting a lot of different fleeing animals such as buffalos, birds and deer. The embroidery artwork itself is 140 cm long and 76 cm wide.

The textile itself is 89cm long
